The Challenge

As part of the redevelopment project of the properties located at 7301 Décarie Boulevard and 5150–5160 de Namur Street, and in accordance with the master plan for the planning and development of the Namur-Hippodrome District, a technical and financial opportunity and pre-feasibility study is being conducted for the construction of a pedestrian bridge over the Canadian Pacific railway. This bridge, extending from Westbury Street, will connect the Westbury area with the Namur-Hippodrome sectors and the Triangle.

The Response

The goal is to create a bridge exclusively for pedestrians and cyclists, in order to open up these neighborhoods, bring communities closer together, and promote active and collective transportation as a natural choice for residents. This is an ambitious project that aims to make mobility more inclusive and sustainable while harmoniously connecting urban spaces.

Given the urban constraints, particularly related to the ramp landing sites, two bridge options have emerged. The Spiral option emphasizes strong urban integration and multipolar accessibility, linking an open, lively southern slope to a structuring northern slope. It forms part of the future west-east mobility and biodiversity corridor, with a fluid and landscaped route that promotes urban continuity. The Zig-Zag option focuses on a sculptural and unifying architectural gesture, combining sinuous ramps with an exposed truss span. It creates an iconic urban landmark, serving both as a mobility infrastructure and an architectural event, reinforcing neighborhood identity and enhancing the user experience.
